Flugelhorn Mouthpieces
Flugelhorn Taper Guide
Unlike trumpet mouthpieces, flugelhorn mouthpieces are made with several different shank tapers. Choosing the correct taper is important because using the wrong taper can negatively affect intonation, response, slotting, and overall playability.
Large Morse Taper (Standard Taper)
The most common flugelhorn taper. Used by many American-style flugelhorns including Yamaha, Getzen, Callet, Stomvi, Benge, King, Blessing, CarolBrass, Conn Vintage One, Weril, Holton, Schilke, Allure, Jupiter, Austin Custom, and many others.
Small Morse Taper (Bach Taper)
Used by Bach flugelhorns and several European designs, including Courtois, LeBlanc/Sandoval, B&S, Taylor, RS Berkeley, and some Kanstul models (725, 1025, and newer 1525).
French (Straight) Taper
A specialized taper used primarily by Couesnon flugelhorns and a small number of other instruments, including the Flip Oakes "Wild Thing", Kanstul CCF 925, and original F. Besson Flugelhorns.
Why Does Taper Matter?
A flugelhorn mouthpiece may physically fit an instrument even when the taper is incorrect. However, using the wrong taper can cause poor intonation, weak slotting, reduced response, and an inconsistent feel throughout the instrument's range.
Not Sure Which Taper You Need?
Flugelhorn taper standards vary by manufacturer and model. If you're unsure, contact us with your instrument make and model and we'll help determine the correct taper before you order.
