Cut for Sleeves
Bob Reeves developed his sleeve system in 1973 as a method for adjusting the annulus ("gap") between the end of the mouthpiece and the beginning of the lead pipe. This allows the player to "fine tune" the playing back pressure of his/her set-up. It also allows the player to use one mouthpiece on different instruments that require a different gap.
The correct gap can only be determined through experimentation as it varies from player to player, mouthpiece to mouthpiece, and instrument to instrument. Virtually any trumpet mouthpiece can be converted to use Bob Reeves sleeves. They are available in sizes #0.5 through #7 in half sizes. A #0.5 sleeve will give you the greatest gap. A #7 is the smallest.

The Laskey 84C Trumpet Mouthpiece features a 17.40 mm rim inner diameter, a standard #27 (3.66 mm) throat, and an 8.38 mm backbore with a classic medium C cup. This configuration offers a balanced combination of warmth, clarity, and projection in a larger rim format.
The medium cup depth produces a full, centered tone with a broad core and flexible dynamic range. It responds well to both lyrical playing and more powerful passages, making it well-suited for orchestral, concert band, and ensemble settings where a strong, well-rounded sound is needed.
The 17.40 mm rim provides a wide, stable feel on the embouchure, supporting endurance and consistent control during extended playing. Combined with the standard throat and backbore, the 84C promotes efficient airflow, smooth articulation, and reliable performance across all registers.
